This winter, the Hinsdale PTA was awarded a Family Reading Experience Diversity Grant sponsored by Office Depot OfficeMax. We received $1000 to help expand and diversify student access to books in our school.
Mrs. Harmon generously helped us by creating recommended book lists suitable for each grade level. As a result, the PTA was able to purchase and distribute 100 books throughout the school. Each pod received 10 or 11 books featuring black, indigenous and/or people of color or disabled people as main characters, or books written and/or illustrated by a black, indigenous or person of color.
The school library also received a copy of all books purchased. This way, Mrs. Harmon can utilize them in class and students have access to check these books out of the library for independent reading.
In addition, we purchased 3 copies of 10 of these books to be used in the book vending machine.
We hope that you will check out the book titles that we purchased for the school. Maybe you will choose to expand your book selections at home or consider other titles in your next library selections!
